Renovating findshorty towers

Renovating findshorty towers
fun with a sledge hammer

It’s been a long 2 years since we decided to renovate our house - most of which was spent trying to find builders, then finding some more when the first lot didn’t show.

I’ve redesigned the house more times that we care to remember, and the poor old pool has been condemned and saved on just as many occasions - but we’re finally off, and I never thought destruction would be so much fun!

The pool is gone, good riddance and hello space; the deck is now without roof, showing us wonderful night time stars, and a great warming sun during these chilly winter mornings (ok, 24 degrees during the day isn’t exactly what you’d call the wooliest of winters, but even in Queensland its a little parky at night); and we have the makings of a mountain of debris quickly overtaking our newly created space where the pool used to be.

I’ve been assured it has to get worse before it can get better, so I’m happy, the family is happy and the cats are confused, but things are most definitely getting exciting!

It may have been a subconcious decision driven by years of design experience, but it seems we have approached the house reno much like we’d approach a website renovation:

  • Identify our Goal

More living space, a bigger garden and an extra bedroom.

  • Address the Problem Areas

A big, slimy overground pond pool and a pink kitchen.

  • Create Architecture

Design a new interior layout, extend where necessary, and develop a new garden design (sans slime-hole) to cater to our target demographic (a rapidly growing 2 year old with boundless energy).

  • Perform Renovation

And this is where we can thankfully rely on the expertise of our builder. Up until a couple of months ago I wouldn’t have known a rafter from a truss, or a bearer from a joist (still not entirely clear on either) but there are people out there who know exactly where to put a noggin, the trick is finding the good ones.

Unfortunately, there are builders out there who are more than happy to take your hard earned cash, but are unwilling or unable to do a proper job, and you get left holding the bucket under your brand new, shiny, leaky roof.

If only we had found the right builder with the right advice, right at the beginning of our 2 years!

So our long, sometimes painful journey has inspired me to write this post, in the hope that we, as a family that has suffered (cue the violins) the agony and disappointment of not being able to find the right advice, can offer our expertise and our experience in building and renovating high quality websites, so you don’t have to share our pain (although sympathy is always greatfully received, we’d rather help you out).

If you’re struggling with your website, and you can’t find good advice, or you’ve been left holding a leaky bucket under a flimsy structure, get in touch to arrange a free consultation and we’ll help you fix your loose noggins.

More pics and damage reports (hopefully not slipped discs) to follow…
